How to protect yourself from iPhone thieves locking you out of your own device

iPhone Thieves Exploiting Recovery Key to Lock Users Out

A concerning new method of gaining control over iPhones and permanently locking users out of their devices is on the rise. Thieves are exploiting a security setting called the recovery key to gain access to user data, including photos, messages, and financial information.

While this type of attack is difficult to execute, requiring thieves to observe users entering their passcodes or manipulate them into sharing them, it has been successful in some cases. Once thieves have access to the passcode, they can change the Apple ID, disable "Find My iPhone," and reset the recovery key, effectively locking the original owner out of the device.

Apple has acknowledged the issue and emphasized the importance of maintaining access to trusted devices and recovery keys. However, critics argue that the company should offer more customer support options and authentication methods to prevent such attacks.

To protect themselves, users can take several steps:

 * Protect the passcode: Use Face ID or Touch ID when unlocking the phone in public, set a longer, alphanumeric passcode, and change it regularly.

 * Enable Screen Time settings: Set up a secondary password to prevent unauthorized changes to the Apple ID.

 * Back up regularly: Regularly back up data to iCloud or iTunes, and consider using additional cloud storage services for important files.

By following these steps, users can reduce the risk of falling victim to this sophisticated theft method.
