Google pushing for 7 years of updates on more Android phones, starting with Snapdragon 8 Elite
8Good News for Android Updates: Google Makes Long-Term Support Easier
For years, short update lifespans have plagued Android phones. Thankfully, Google is taking steps to change that.
The Problem: Traditionally, chipmakers only supported their chips for a few years, and Google needed updated software from them for each new Android version. This limited updates to 3 years for most phones.
The Solution: Google's new "Longevity GRF" program allows manufacturers to keep using the original vendor software for up to 7 Android updates! This means phones could potentially receive updates for a much longer period.
The Trade-Off: There is a catch. While the core Android OS can be updated for 7 years, the Linux kernel (which handles core functions) still needs updates every 3 years. This is mainly for security reasons, as older kernels might be vulnerable or difficult to patch.
Missing Features: Some features might be missing on phones receiving updates through this program. New features often require updates to vendor software, which won't happen as frequently underGoo "Longevity GRF". Examples include the Android 12's 2G toggle and Android 13's flashlight brightness control.
The Future: Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 8 Elite chip is the first to be supported by "Longevity GRF". While no official announcements have been made yet, this program has the potential to significantly improve update lifespans for many Android phone.
