TikTok blamed for hit to Iceland cucumber supply
Icelandic supermarkets have been left in a pickle, after a viral TikTok trend saw an unprecedented surge in demand for cucumbers leaving suppliers racing to keep up.
A salad recipe featuring grated cucumbers, sesame oil, garlic, rice vinegar, and chili oil has taken Iceland by storm, driven by social media influencers. The surge in popularity has led to a dramatic increase in demand, causing local farmers to struggle to keep up, according to the Horticulturists’ Sales Company (SFG).
While Hagkaup, a major supermarket chain, questioned the direct connection between the recipe's trend and the spike in cucumber sales, they confirmed that purchases have more than doubled. Kristín Linda Sveinsdóttir, SFG’s marketing director, noted that farmers are currently unable to meet this rising demand but expects that supplies will return to normal within a week.
The viral trend traces back to Canada, where TikToker Logan Moffitt, known as "Cucumber Guy," has been sharing creative cucumber recipes and has amassed over 5.5 million followers. His signature phrase, "Sometimes, you just need to eat a whole cucumber," has become popular among his audience since he started posting almost daily in July.
While the Icelandic recipe has also driven sales of other ingredients, experts urge caution in linking the shortages directly to the social media trend, as seasonal fluctuations in cucumber availability are common in Iceland. Hagkaup's food product manager, Vignir Þór Birgisson, stated that while some ingredient sales, like sesame oil, have increased, the current cucumber shortages are not solely due to the TikTok phenomenon.
