PlayStation 5 Pro – The First Hands-On Preview
PlayStation 5 players are well-acquainted with the choice between “Favor Graphics” and “Favor Performance.” With the introduction of the PS5 Pro, Sony aims to eliminate this dilemma, allowing gamers to enjoy the best of both worlds for a price of $700.
Recently, I visited PlayStation headquarters in San Mateo, California, where I had the opportunity to test the PS5 Pro alongside the standard PS5. I played a range of about a dozen titles, including *Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth*, *Marvel’s Spider-Man 2*, *Horizon Forbidden West*, and *The Last of Us Part II Remastered*. The improvements were striking, particularly the new AI-driven resolution upscaling technology. Despite some skepticism regarding its price tag, the PS5 Pro appears to offer significant benefits for console gamers ready to invest in an uncompromised experience.
At its core, the PS5 Pro boasts enhanced hardware, featuring a more powerful GPU. While Sony hasn't disclosed specific figures, they stated that the Pro will have 67% more compute units compared to the base model's 36, placing it roughly in line with the AMD Radeon RX 6800 in PC graphics terms. In addition to the hardware boost, Sony highlights two key software upgrades: improved ray tracing and the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) for upscaling.
Games optimized for the PS5 Pro will achieve the visual fidelity of the previous "Favor Graphics" mode while maintaining the framerate and performance levels of the "Favor Performance" mode.
Stay tuned for more insights into the technical advancements and capabilities of the PS5 Pro!
