Mark Zuckerberg says his goal for the next decade is to build open-source platforms and have them win

The debate between closed and open-source models in technology continues, highlighting distinct advantages for each. Closed models tend to offer enhanced security due to the inaccessibility of their source code, making them less vulnerable to exploitation. In contrast, open-source models can accelerate technological development and democratize access, as anyone can modify and redistribute the code.

Mark Zuckerberg has expressed a vision for the future that favors the growth of open platforms. He stated, "Part of my goal for the next 10-15 years... is to build the next generation of open platforms and have the open platforms win," predicting that this shift will invigorate the tech industry.

Meta has already made significant moves toward this vision, notably with the release of Llama 2 in 2023, an open-source AI model that gained rapid popularity within the tech community. However, the open-source approach carries inherent risks, such as misuse by malicious actors. For instance, Llama 2 faced scrutiny for potentially providing harmful information, a concern Zuckerberg acknowledged by noting that similar data is available in other places.

In July, Zuckerberg garnered positive attention when Meta launched Llama 3.1, which was praised by industry leaders as an "incredible gift," further solidifying his commitment to fostering open-source innovation.
