James Bond in real life: Elon Musk shows off driverless feature, says soon you may call your Tesla from anywhere

Tesla’s Smart Summon feature, recently highlighted by Elon Musk on Twitter, seems like a concept straight out of a James Bond film. Musk tweeted that Tesla vehicles are "rapidly approaching the ability to summon from anywhere at all," generating excitement about the future of autonomous driving. This technology enables drivers to call their car from any location within a parking lot, where it will navigate itself to their position.

This innovation is reminiscent of a scene from the 1997 James Bond movie "Tomorrow Never Dies," in which 007, portrayed by Pierce Brosnan, remotely controls his BMW 750iL using a mobile phone. In that thrilling sequence, Bond directs the car through obstacles while seated in the backseat. Unlike Bond’s remote control version, Tesla’s Smart Summon employs fully autonomous driving technology, taking the concept further.

Following Musk’s announcement, Tesla clarified that the Smart Summon feature allows owners to summon their vehicle from anywhere in a parking lot and send it to a designated spot. To illustrate this capability, Tesla shared a video showing a man summoning his Tesla, which then autonomously navigates through the parking lot to reach him, filmed under supervision for safety purposes.

Musk’s vision for expanding Smart Summon beyond parking lots reflects the natural progression from science fiction to reality. While Bond’s gadgets were products of cinematic imagination, Tesla’s advancements are progressively making such technology a reality.
