Google TV Streamer Review: Streaming Into The Smart Home

Google has introduced the Google TV Streamer, the successor to its long-standing Chromecast device. This new streamer offers features like 4K HDR support, increased app storage, and enhanced integration with Google’s smart home ecosystem. If you're already familiar with Chromecast, transitioning to the Google TV Streamer will be seamless, as the Google TV interface remains consistent across both devices. Users can expect a noticeably faster and more responsive experience.

In comparison to the previous Chromecast model, the TV Streamer boasts double the memory, quadrupled on-device storage, an upgraded processor, and an ethernet port for a wired network connection. The Google TV Streamer, controlled via a dedicated remote, features a directional pad along with home, back, and action buttons. Users can also utilize voice commands, which the interface seems to encourage for easier navigation, especially for text input in search fields.

For most users, the primary concern will be accessing their favorite films and shows rather than the specifics of the hardware or interface. However, the launch has faced challenges: while major streaming platforms like Twitch, Prime Video, and Disney Plus are supported, essential UK apps such as BBC iPlayer and Channel 4’s on-demand app are currently unavailable. These popular services are expected to be added soon, but their absence is a notable setback for many users.

On the hardware side, the Google TV Streamer enhances the Chromecast experience by offering improved features and capabilities. Its integration with Google Home turns the TV into a smart home hub, potentially appealing to users interested in smart home technology.

Yet, the software still requires refinement. The Google Home integration is limited to basic device control, lacking more advanced routines and functionalities that are available in the mobile app. While the familiar interface is a plus, the absence of several key apps in the UK indicates that there are still hurdles to overcome, likely related to licensing and technical issues.

In summary, while the Google TV Streamer has great potential, it needs additional development to fully incorporate all the desired app partners and enhance the overall user experience.
